The Economy Is Spinning
– publication
(April 2017)

This book brings together contributions from visual artists, writers and theorists to rethink the way that the language of economics and finance influences our thought and modes of expression. Through artistic contributions, image essays and texts this book aims to manifest, across both art and theory, a poetic counter-language.

Inspiration for the chart-like visualizations that run across the book’s cover and those pages containing photographs from the exhibition was drawn from various sources, including: economic graphs representing interest rates, effects of bank regulations, commodity futures prices, etc.; the lines of city skylines overgrown with skyscrapers; and finally, from a subjective model developed in order to produce graphical representations of dreams. The resulting design, in which charts and skylines grow into dreamscapes, in a way also refers to the origin of the title of this project: “The Economy is Spinning” was first uttered in a moment of dreamspeak, in a state between sleep and wakefulness, as if it was itself produced by the capitalist unconscious.
